Never Ask a Cow to Dine
   by Denise Rodgers

Never ask a cow to dine
on roasted quail or porcupine.
And please don’t make the huge mistake
of ordering a T-bone steak
or braised beef tips cooked by the dozen.
(To her it may look like a cousin.)

Just order up the salad fare
and skip the brisket — extra rare.
For extra courses what she needs
is tall, wild grass and common weeds.
But worry not — if food’s a dud
your dinner date may chew her cud.
Just watch her as she starts to chew,
and if she talks — you’ll hear her moo.
